Students just like you are being targeted by criminal gangs to launder money through their bank accounts. Approaches are often made through social media platforms, such as DMs on Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook or other messaging platforms such as Discord, Whatsapp or Telegram.
3 in 5 students have been approached in person or online to become a money mule. Do not accept message requests from people you don’t know, and if you receive a message with a link to click from a friend, speak to them in person before you respond.
WHAT IS A MONEYMULE?
Money mulling is a type of money laundering. A money mule is a person who receives money from a third party in their bank account and transfers it to another one or takes it out in cash and gives it to someone else – usually they will receive money for doing this, or something else of value such as designer goods or drugs.
It is likely that you may never have heard this term before, 52% of students surveyed didnt know what it was. But you may have been asked for your “Deets & Squares” , or been approached as though it is the offer of a job – usually a quick way to make easy cash.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE?
Crooks on Campus is a fictional docu/drama based upon the experiences of two students who get involved in fraud and financial crime. Based upon real-life events, Crooks on Campus shows you exactly what happens when criminals get their hands on your cash, and how they will try and exploit you as a moneymule in order to cash in on their criminal activity.
You can watch Crooks on Campus at exclusive screenings at your university where you will also have the opportunity to question Tony Sales, formerly known as “Britain’s Greatest Fraudster”, about how criminals might target you and what you can do to protect yourself. Check back here to find out when we are visiting your university, but in the meantime, checkout the trailer above.
HOW CAN I KEEP MYSELF SAFE?
Criminals are reliant upon you not really understanding that what they are asking you to do is a crime and that you could go to prison for up to 14 years for becoming a money mule.
The best ways you can keep yourself safe is to keep informed and report. When you understand what criminals are trying to do you can make an informed decision, rather than getting duped into doing something you don’t want to do. If you are approached it is really important that you report it to your local police via Crime Stoppers. You can get support to do this from your university advice centre or student support.
